Poetry Books

Beastly Feasts: A Mischievous Menagerie in Rhyme.
By: Robert L. Forbes
Drawings by Ronald Searle

I find this poetry book to be great. All the poems are about animals doing crazy, out the ordinary things. I would recommend having it in your classroom library because it contains many silly poems that children will find engaging. I believe that the male population of students would love this book as well. One of my favorite poems in the book is titled "The Unfluttery Butterfly." The reason for the butterfly being so unfluttery is because all she eats is butter, thick cream, jam, vanilla cones, and other things that are not good for her. Basically, shes too heavy to be able to fly. The pictures in this book are also very colorful and fun to look at.

One of my favorite books... EVER!

"Knuffle Bunny" by Mo Willems.

Knuffle Bunny is a story about a father and his daughter Trixie who take a trip to do laundry. Trixie had taken knuffle bunny along for the trip only to realize knuffle bunny was not present as they were walking home. It turns out, Trixie's father accidently put knuffle bunny in with a load of laundry. Since Trixie is very young, all she can do is cry uncontrollably the whole way home. Trixie's father tried EVERYTHING to calm her down but he couldn't figure out why she was so upset. When they got home, Trixie was still wailing. Her mother looked at her father and asked "where is knuffle bunny?!" Realizing her bunny was missing, they run to the laundry mat and find it. Trixie then stops crying and all is well.

This is a great story, because I am sure many children can relate to Trixie and how she feels when she doesn't have knuffle bunny with her. I would suggest reading this book to preschoolers or kindergarteners.
